Drug Trends: What You Need to Know for 2025

The drug landscape is changing rapidly, which means there are new challenges and heightened risks that we all need to be aware of when we work with young people. In recent years, the prevalence of dangerous substances, contamination, and overdose deaths has reached alarming levels in the UK.  These are urgent issues and educating ourselves is a first, but vitally important step.

As a substance misuse educator, you’ll know I talk plainly about drugs and dangers. And about the need for education and jargon-free, practical communication. I’ve updated my popular Drug Trends training webinar for 2025 because I’m seeing is a lot of change in what substances are available and the trends for overdose and drug-related death are worrying.

Stacey leads a conference educating about drug awareness

Drug Trends 2025 is a two-hour webinar that offers a pathway to understanding the risks and equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions. And if you book before 11 March, it comes with a bonus webinar worth £49 – choose between sleep and vaping topics – and 17 drug education cards related to the substances you will be learning about.

1. The Rise of Ketamine Abuse

Once known primarily as a medical anaesthetic, ketamine has surged in popularity as a recreational drug. Its dissociative effects make it appealing to some, but its abuse carries serious risks. Long-term use can result in severe bladder damage, cognitive impairment, and addiction. Alarmingly, ketamine is also becoming a common ingredient in drug cocktails, increasing the danger of overdose.

2. The Increase in Drug-Related Deaths

Drug-related deaths have reached unprecedented levels, with statistics showing a stark increase year over year. Factors contributing to this trend include the widespread availability of high-strength substances, a lack of awareness about proper dosages, and limited access to harm reduction resources. These numbers underscore the urgent need for public education and intervention.

3. Cocaine Overdose on the Rise

Cocaine, long associated with its stimulant effects, is becoming deadlier than ever. The rise in overdoses is linked to increasing potency and the common practice of mixing cocaine with other substances, such as fentanyl — a synthetic opioid that’s 50-100 times stronger than morphine. These combinations are particularly lethal, even for seasoned users.

4. High-Strength Pills and Increased Sizes

The trend toward higher potency and larger pill sizes has made it harder for users to gauge safe doses. Pills like MDMA and ecstasy now frequently contain dangerous levels of active ingredients, leading to heightened risks of overdose, dehydration, and even organ failure. What used to be seen as “party drugs” now carry deadly consequences.

5. Contamination in Vapes and Synthetic Cannabinoids

Vapes, marketed as a “safer” alternative to smoking, have not escaped the reach of drug contamination. Recent reports reveal the presence of synthetic cannabinoids — highly potent and unpredictable substances — in illicit vape products. These chemicals can cause severe side effects, including psychosis, seizures, and cardiovascular issues.

6. The Emergence of “Pink Cocaine”

One of the newest substances to emerge is “pink cocaine,” also known as 2C-B. Marketed as an alternative to MDMA or LSD, this psychedelic stimulant is unpredictable in both potency and effects. Users often misunderstand its strength, leading to unintentional overdoses and dangerous interactions with other drugs. Pink cocaine’s increasing availability highlights the need for awareness about these emerging threats.
